The gothic vampire love has a pleasant cast and Grey artfully portrays teen anger in the hero as she tells the tale in first person. Not yet a full vampire she does not slot in with the humans or the vampire scholars at the gothic boarding college.

The North Renaissance alludes to the Renaissance movement which happened in nations outside of Italy. While Renaissance in Italy was impressed by Humanism, in north Europe it was galvanized by spiritual sentiments. They gave more seriousness to paint instead of proportion, point of view and anatomy. Climate conditions also played a huge role in the North Renaissance. The climate wasn't conducive to curing frescoes and egg tempera that was painted on wood.
